Hot rods, rat rods, vintage trailers and more are lining up to take part in the Galveston Island Beach Revue’s the Hot Rod + Classic Car and Vintage Trailer show. This year’s competition will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at Beach Central, 2102 Seawall, on Saturday, April 28. Registration is $20 per car, no models after 1975 are allowed, with the first 50 cars getting a complimentary dash plate. Awards will be given in a variety of classes, including: Best in Show (top 3), Best Paint, Farthest Distance Traveled, Best Club Participation, Judge’s Choice Award, Best Interior and Best Vintage Trailer. The car show is supported by Galveston’s Classic Auto Group.
“For years, we’ve had people bringing out their classic cars to the Beach Revue,” says Will Wright, Galveston Island Beach Revue promoter. “We added in the car show in 2015 and it has become one of the signature pieces of the annual event.”
The car show is part of the 2017 Galveston Island Beach Revue, held April 27 & 28 and is free to the public to view. Activities throughout the weekend include vintage-inspired music, special happy hours and Sunday brunch, a vintage baseball game and the Bathing Beauties contest. ABOUT THE GALVESTON ISLAND BEACH REVUE
Dubbed the “Pageant of Pulchritude” by C.E. Barfield, Galveston’s Bathing Beauties Contest began in the summer of 1920 and marked the kick-off for tourist season each year. By 1928, the event, which had morphed into the “bathing girl revue” had become so popular, the Island’s population was said to have tripled during the event weekend. These Island pageants were the beginning of what we know today as the Miss Universe Pageant. The famed Galveston Bathing Beauties pageants ended in 1932 due in part to the Great Depression and were resurrected in 2009.
Always a crowd favorite, the weekend’s main event is the Bathing Beauties Contest, held at Beach Central, 2102 Seawall Blvd., on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. Retro swim wear is chic and vintage is king as contestants from across the country catwalk across Galveston’s historic shoreline modeling vintage and vintage inspired swim wear and accessories that echo the “good ole days” of Galveston’s summertime history. Classic pinup styles, the likes that Esther Williams, Marilyn Monroe and Bettie Page made famous, will heat up the beaches as 40 contestants vie for cash prizes and top honors.
